I haven't made this very clear yet in this blog, but I am a die hard Yankees fan. I've lived in New York my entire life and have been rooting for the Bronx Bombers for as long as I can remember. The Yanks had a great Spring Training and when this past Sunday swung around, my hopes were at an all time high for this upcoming season.
Not going to lie, my hopes were definitely not as high after Opening Day. The Rays just absolutely rocked us. Tanaka had an awful showing giving up seven earned runs in just 2.2 innings. The Yankees just didn't hit. It was pretty brutal. Possibly the worst part of the day was seeing Gary Sanchez going 0 - 5 to start off the year.
These worries were definitely relinquished a bit in game two last night. The Yankees won 5 - 0. CC Sabathia went five innings strong which was excellent to see. He definitely looked much better than he did last year and there as he was hitting 93mph on the gun and had good control over his off speed stuff. Didi Gregorious' backup Torreyes had a great day on both sides of the ball, smacking a two-run homer and making some excellent defensive plays. He will definitely be able to get the job done until Didi is healthy. Chase Headly has looked great thus far as well having five hits through two games. Gary Sanchez is still hitless through two games, but I'm not worried. He smoked a ball down the third base line last night and Evan Longoria just made a great play to steal a hit from him. Hopefully Gary can break out tonight, and the Yankees are able to take 2 of 3 from the Rays.
